a royal pleasure garden

Tirtagangga, meaning holy water of the Ganges in Balinese, is one of the world’s romantic gardens out of time. Gushing springs flowing from the hillside and beneath an ancient Banyan tree and holy temple fill the myriad reflecting and swimming pools that grace the Water Palace. The prominent 11 tiered lotus fountain has become the symbol for Tirtagangga since its creation by the late Raja of Karangasem in 1948. After seeing photos of the Versaille Palace in France, the Raja was inspired to create his second Water Palace in the mountains overlooking his kingdom. The waters of the holy spring have been praised by island priests for their healing and youth giving powers. Thus the Raja named them after the holy river Ganges in India which is famous for these qualities. It is said that if one bathes in the waters of Tirtagangga on the full moon you will be blessed with lasting youth and your illnesses will be healed. Tirtagangga is the “Fountain of Youth” of Bali.

Villa Djamrud (Emerald Villa), comprising of the Marble Suite and Lion Villa, overlooks the magnificent Water Palace spring fed pools and fountains. Beyond the gardens are sculpted rice terrace fields in classic Bali style which lead the eye to surrounding mountains, hills and the deep blue sea with Lombok Island floating peacefully in the distance.

Both villas have been designed and appointed for your pleasure, privacy and comfort. As was the wish of the late Raja, Tirtagangga remains open to the public and is enjoyed by the local people and island visitors on a daily basis. You are not separated from Balinese life in your villa compound, rather you are invited to participate and enjoy interacting with the many colorful and heartfelt people who live around you.

villa djamrud

Villa Djamrud (Emerald Villa) is really two villas, the Marble Suite and Villa Lion. As a whole Villa Djamrud features 2 bedrooms with 2 ½ baths, two living rooms, dining pavilion, day bed “dream” pavilion, and 2 spring-fed dipping pools, all overlooking the beautiful Tirtagangga Water Palace. You can engage the entire villa, or choose either the Marble Suite or Villa Lion according to your needs. There is free WIFI in the entire compound.

Villa Djamrud is shaded by a 100 year old banyan tree and surrounded by ponds and gardens. It is decorated with antique chairs, tables, rugs, tibetan tangkas, and paintings, with large wooden beds with mosquito nets and fans. There are small refrigerators in each villa plus a telephone and large refrigerator in the kitchen.

The villas are within the former royal family compound, inside the Tirtagangga Water Palace. A short 3 minute walk from the parking area, passing local shops, cafes and restaurants, through the palace gardens you arrive at the villas within the Tirta Ayu Hotel compound. Tirtagangga is 25 minutes from a magnificent white sand beach, 30 minutes from Candi Dasa, 30 minutes from Amed, 2 hours from Ubud, 2 ½ hours from the airport and a century away from the hectic life back home.

marble suite

The Marble Suite offers a stereo DVD player and satellite TV, dining and daybed pavilions in the garden with an octagonal dipping pool with foundation & waterfall in between. There is a comfortable living room and full bathroom downstairs. Upstairs is a spacious master bedroom with ½ bath.
